1910 Flying Merkel Flying Merkel was known for having one of the finest rides in all of motorcycling and as one of the most reliable motorcycles on the road. Merkel was more costly than many motorcycles of the time, but the engines utilized the best German-made bearings and other high quality materials, which led to excellent reliability. Joseph Merkel was considered to be one of the finest engineers in US motorcycling. He produced dozens of innovative designs; many were copied by other motorcycle makers. Merkel designed a unique front and rear suspension system for his motorcycles. The rear suspension was a mono-shock design that proved to be decades ahead of its time. Even more impressive was the front fork of the Flying Merkels. The front forks were telescopic in principle using dual coil springs, yet resembling an un-sprung trussed fork. The fork was so good that many manufacturers put Merkel forks on their machines through the 1920's, years after Merkel had ceased production.
