1901 Steffey Motor Bicycle- Circa Gallery The Steffey Manufacturing Company opened its Pennsylvania factory doors in 1900. By 1901, Steffey was building water-cooled engines in a range of sizes, built for a variety of uses. They offered both two and four cylinder engines, all had one piece steel crankshaft with an aluminum crankcase and a "Steffey Perfect Silencer". The 1901 "Motor Bicycle" would be purchased as a kit, or completely built. It came with a 200cc, 2 cycle engine. The 2 horsepower machine was capable of speeds between 20 and 25 MPH. This Steffey is compromised of most of its original parts. The wood and paint are in original condition. After being disassembled and properly cleaned, unfortunately, some of the parts were unable to be saved. The following parts were copied and replaced: the coil, battery tube, sheave, and tank. The engine was disassembled and fitted with piston rings, gaskets, and seals. The lamp is an original brass "Electro" carbide lamp. The cycleometer is by New York "Standard" Watch Company. The rims have been re-spoked and trued with nickel spokes. Throughout 2010, this motorcycle won awards like "Most outstanding Motorcycle", "People's Choice", and "Judge's Choice" at the Greenwich Concours D'Elegance and the Concours International. |
