1935 Harley-Davidson Model RL This 1935 Harley Davidson RL is unrestored. Due to the Great Depression many 1934 models were sold for sixteen months as a result of low sales. During this time, came a reduction in pay for the Milwaukee workforce and technological advancement was not at the top of the list. Harley Davidson introduced Art Deco. The streamline tail light, as seen of this 1935, was available only for 1934 models. Most likely this streamline tail light was left over from 1934 and given a 1935 engine number to help it sell faster. In 1935 skirted rear fenders were added. There was an optional $15 chrome package. All 1935 models had carburized brake drums with a harder lining. The R Twins came with a constant mesh gearbox, quickly detachable rear wheel. An improved oil pump, new generator, spring fork, a stronger frame, larger fly wheels, better valve springs and a new four plate clutch. New cylinder heads were used for better heat dissipation. This was also the year that a hub drive speedometer was added. This was purchased in 1999 from the Sublette Brothers in PA at the Oley, Pennsylvania Swap Meet. *Engine: Flathead, 45 degree, side-valve V-Twin Displacement: 45.32 ci - 18.5 HP Bore and Stroke: 2.75 x 3.81 in *Carburetor: Schebler Deluxe *Transmission: 3 speed *Ignition: Coil/Points *Battery: 6 volt *Drive Train: Primary: Duplex Chain Final: Chain *Brakes: Front: Expanding Shoe Rear: Contracting Band *Suspension: Leading Link Spring Fork *Specifications: Wheel Base: 57.7 inches Fuel Capacity: 3.75 gallons Oil Capacity: 7.5 pints Weight: 390 lbs Top Speed: 70 mph Production: 819 |
